Herpes (Pacheco)

About herpes

Pacheco's disease is caused by a specific herpes virus that only affects parrots. This virus is highly contagious and can spread rapidly. Often, the pathogen is unknowingly introduced by purchasing infected parrots that carry the virus without showing obvious symptoms. Under stressful situations, dormant herpes infections can become active again. Sick birds show general symptoms such as apathy, loss of appetite and sometimes vomiting. Often we see diarrhoea with a conspicuous yellow or green colour in this process. Unfortunately, many of these infected parrots die within hours or days. In addition, sudden death without prior symptoms is also common, especially in young parrots. Upon observing these symptoms, it is crucial to consult a vet immediately. Prompt treatment and isolation of affected birds are essential to prevent further spread.
