Autopsie for pigeons

When is an autopsy useful

Autopsy is an effective method to determine the cause of death of a bird or confirm a diagnosis. Especially for problems in a cage or aviary environment, where several birds are together, an autopsy allows you to intervene in time to prevent further complications. Based on an autopsy, we at NeorniLab can quickly formulate a diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment. If necessary, further cytological, bacteriological and virological tests can be performed.

Less well known is an autopsy on an egg. In case of unfertilised eggs or embryonic mortality in the egg, further investigation can be done for (non-)infectious causes.

Request an autopsy

Contact us by phone on +32 11 96 91 02 if you wish to request an autopsy. You can then bring the bird in during our opening hours, or send it by post (preferably refrigerated). Please fill out the request form in both cases as completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: store your bird immediately after mortality in the fridge (2-8°C) in a plastic (zip) bag. The bird should reach us within 72 hours of mortality. Never keep your bird in the freezer, this can cause tissue damage. Bring in eggs as fresh as possible. NeorniLab cannot be held responsible in case of incorrect storage.
