Herpes - Mycoplasma - Chlamydia (respiratory infections)

Respiratory infections in pigeons

It is possible to have your pigeons tested for the main infectious respiratory diseases: herpes virus, mycoplasma and chlamydia. Timely detection and management of these viruses can drastically improve the health and performance of your pigeons. NeorniLab is at your service to provide thorough and accurate screening.

  • The herpes virus can cause tracheitis (windpipe infection), conjunctivitis, deposits in the throat and acute mortality. Young pigeons are often more susceptible to the virus and can show severe symptoms, including coughing, sneezing and general weakness. Mortality in young pigeons can be avoided by vaccinating breeding pigeons before breeding.
  • Mycoplasma can lead to chronic respiratory problems. Symptoms include difficult breathing, coughing, sneezing and reduced condition. This bacterium can spread easily through direct contact or through the air.
  • Chlamydia, often referred to as 'Parrot Disease', 'Psittacosis' or 'Ornithosis' is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. The bacterium is a zoonosis, meaning it can be transmitted from parrot to human. In pigeons, infection can range from asymptomatic to severe signs of illness. Common symptoms in infected pigeons include reduced appetite, fatigue, respiratory problems (such as nasal discharge and pumping respiration), diarrhoea, conjunctivitis (eye inflammation) and even acute mortality in some cases.
