Trichomonas - Yeasts & fungi (crop infections)

Crop infections in pigeons

You can have your pigeons tested at NeorniLab for important crop infections such as trichomonas, yeasts and fungi. By avoiding or, in some cases, controlling these infections, you can prevent condition loss and other problems during the racing season.

Trichomonas

Trichomonas is a single-celled parasite that can cause symptoms such as beleg in the throat, sinusitis and conjunctivitis in pigeons. Older pigeons usually show mild symptoms such as condition loss and throat infections, while young pigeons may experience more severe symptoms due to their lack of immunity against this parasite. This can manifest as coughing, blocked nostrils, digestive problems, lethargy, reduced appetite or even death.

Yeast and fungal infections

Yeast and fungal infections in the crop are usually caused by candidagists, where active stages of these yeast may be present. A crop candidiasis can be caused by crop stasis, feed/water contamination or excessive use of antibiotics, among others.

Suitable samples

  • Cropswab

We prefer to receive a fresh crop swab. This gives a clearer picture of the infection pressure and consequently a more accurate result. You can have a crop swab taken during a consultation at veterinary practice NeorniVet. If a fresh crop swab is not possible, you can provide us with a dried crop swab in a tube. In this case, the result may be less accurate.
