LDHA (Lactate dehydrogenase gene type A)

About LDHA

Lactate dehydrogenase, an enzyme encoded by the LDHA gene, plays a known role in our physical and mental health. The point mutation on the LDHA gene is located on an intron. Such a change in an intron can affect how often the gene is used to make the protein. This is called gene expression. However, when looking at the point mutation in the LDHA gene in pigeons, it is not yet clear how this mutation, based solely on the altered enzyme activity, affects their flight performance. There may be other, as yet unknown mutations that are inherited along with the LDHAA allele that also have an impact on flight performance.

Scientific research undeniably shows that selection based on the LDHAA allele in racing pigeons can improve the genetic quality of their performance. In short, by selective breeding based on this allele, we can optimise the performance of racing pigeons. Some studies with a limited sample in a standard Belgian group of racing pigeons show that about 3.74% have the LDHAAA genotype. In addition, some 22.42% have the LDHAAG genotype (= LDHAAB genotype). These percentages are probably even on the high side. However, in the pigeons that perform best, the LDHAA allele is more common.

Suitable samples

Feathers

  • One set of 4-5 freshly plucked breast feathers or 2-3 tail or wing feathers
  • Fallen moulting feathers, down feathers and blood feathers should be avoided. These sometimes contain insufficient DNA or can cause damage to the feather follicle when pulled out.
  • Blood feathers are the new feathers that can be recognised by the blue sleeve at the base of the plume.
  • To avoid contamination, the shaft (the end of the feather that comes out of the bird's skin) must not be touched with the hands

Blood sample

  • Small amounts (capillary tube) are sufficient for accurate analysis

Cheek swab of a nestling

  • A gentle way to collect DNA from young birds
  • Caution: avoid mixing with food or food waste
