Performance genes (genotyping) for pigeons

Selecting and pairing pigeons based on (among other things) performance genes is called marker assisted selection or MAS and is becoming more and more standard in the breeding of various species. For racing pigeons, 9 mutations on 8 performance genes can currently be tested that are scientifically linked to racing pigeon performance. The success rate of the different markers depends, among other things, on the racing distance for which the pigeons are used.

How does marker assisted selection (MAS) work?
